Gladys Knight is, simply put, one of the great soul singers.

Gladys Knight was a performer from her childhood years, forming the Pips with her brother Merald and a couple cousins. Gladys Knight and her band made the Top Ten in 1961 with the heavily doo wop- influenced "Every Beat of My Heart." A couple singles from this period, "Letter Full of Tears" and "Giving Up," made the Top 40.

Gladys Knight & the Pips developed into one of Motown's most dependable acts. With Norman Whitfield providing the production and much of the songwriting, the Pips fit into the mainstream of Motown's machine well, scoring big hits with "Friendship Train" and the original version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "It Should Have Been Me" and "The End of Our Road," and "If I Were Your Woman."

In 1973, Gladys Knight had her biggest hit with "Neither One of Us." Gladys Knight & the Pips then reeled off a series of hits: "Midnight Train to Georgia," "I've Got to Use My Imagination," and "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me."

Gladys Knight won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for her album At Last.

In 2005, Gladys Knight won a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance for her duet with Ray Charles, "Heaven Help Us All." She was also one of the honorees at Oprah Winfrey's transcendent "Legends Ball." Gladys Knight was also the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BET cable network in 2005.

Gladys Knight won her seventh Grammy Award in 2006.

In 2007, Gladys Knight was ranked number eighteen on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock.

In 2008, Gladys Knight made a guest appearance on Johnny Mathis' A Night to Remember.
