Eddie Griffin is best known to television audiences as "Eddie" in the comedy series Malcom & Eddie for UPN, a role which garnered him a nomination for "Best Actor in a Comedy Series" from the NAACP Image Awards. Eddie stars in the upcoming movies, Double Take and John Q, with Denzel Washington and Robert Duvall. He is also slated to portray Richard Pryor in an upcoming biopic.
Griffin's film credits include a role opposite Rob Schneider in Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo, as a wannabe master gigolo. He was also featured in Picking Up the Pieces, opposite Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Fran Drescher and Elliot Gould. Griffin's comedy album, The Message, features comedic and musical performances by Griffin, as well as Master P, Silkk The Shocker and Fiend. Griffin had the first live comedy/R&B/hip-hop Web cast in which he showcased his comedic theatrics, musical talent and entrepreneurial spirit for a packed audience at the Comedy Store. His show, titled MLK 2K: We Still Have a Dream, was Webcast live on his site.
Griffin's fast track to the comedy spotlight began in Kansas City, where he was the halftime show choreographer for a soccer team. While hanging out at a comedy club, his cousin bet him $50 that he wouldn't go up on stage. Griffin seized the moment, won the bet and hasn't left the stage since. Griffin soon purchased a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, where one month later he was bringing down the house at the famed Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard.
Those performances led to featured appearances on the HBO specials Voodoo Child, One Night Stand (which was nominated for a Cable Ace Award) and Def Comedy Jam. He soon moved to the big screen, starring in the Vietnam-era film The Walking Dead, and appearing in such films as Armageddon, Meteor Man and Jason's Lyric. Griffin's starring role in the UPN hit comedy series Malcom & Eddie as the nightclub owner Eddie Sherman allowed him to show his vast physical and comedic talents, portraying such characters as Prince, Eddie Murphy, Sammy Davis Jr. and Elvis Presley. Griffin has also co-written and directed four episodes of the sitcom, one of which starred his mentor, Richard Pryor.
