50 Cent’s first break came in 1996 when he met Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay, who gave him a tape of beats and asked him to rap over it. Impressed by what he heard, Jay signed the aspiring rapper to his JMJ Records label.
The platinum hitmakers Trackmasters later took notice of 50’s skills and signed him to Columbia Records in 1999. 50's stick-up kid anthem "How to Rob" was an underground hit that saw the newcomer daydreaming of robbing particular big-name rappers. Unable to take a joke, Jay-Z, Big Pun, and others all replied to the song. "It wasn't personal. It was comedy based on truth, which made it so funny," says 50 Cent.
That's when the unbelievable happened, and hip-hop history was written. The energetic CD caught the ear of Eminem, and looked to mentor Dr. Dre to confirm his belief in the young hitmaker. Eminem signed 50 to a seven-figure contract to joint deal with Shady/Aftermath in 2002 and helmed his quick rise toward crossover success in 2003.
"Wanksta," the first single produced for 50, was certainly not intended for radio, but within weeks it had become New York's most requested record.
During the successive months, 50 worked closely with Em and Dre, who would co-executive produce his upcoming debut, “Get Rich or Die Tryin'”, and "In Da Club," its lead single, which became a sizable crossover hit. His initial sales figures reflected this (a record-breaking 872,000 units moved in five days, the best-selling debut album since SoundScan started its tracking system in May 1991)
His sophomore release, “The Massacre” was released in March 2002, and it also sold extremely well. Later in the year, the videogame “50 Cent: Bulletproof” appeared, and in November 2005, the rapper starred in the semi-autobiographical film “Get Rich or Die Tryin'”. 50 Cent has also released a best-selling autobiography.
