The Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel meet while in high school in Sacramento CA, and together formed the innovative group Blackalicious, a two-man combo whose relationship is that of the MC and DJ/Producer. Blackalicious has generally favored what hip-hoppers call the "positive tip"; in other words, its lyrics have often been spiritual and uplifting rather than violent. In the early 1990s Blackalicious released their first recording, "Swan Lake", on Solesides Records. The Solesides Crew consisted of Gab, Xcel and friends of theirs who all met at UC Davis. The single was an underground hit, but label trouble prevented the duo from immediately capitalizing on their fame. Solesides Records then released a Blackalicious EP titled Melodica. By late 1997, Solesides Records had transformed into Quannum Records, and in 1999, Quannum put out another Blackalicious EP, A2G, which served as a precursor to their debut full-length album, Nia, released the following year. This was followed by a major label contract with MCA Records and the release of the critically acclaimed album Blazing Arrow in 2002.
