Hailing from Virginia, the duo known as Clipse were actually one of the rare first artists to work with the Neptunes. Meeting Pharrell Williams in the early '90s, he was very impressed by their talents and decided to help them get a gig. Hooking them up with East/West Records, an early single flopped and the group seemed done with. Williams was not discouraged, and continued to hype the group until Star Trak/Arista picked up the group in 2001. The Neptunes stepped behind the boards and the end result was Lord Willin', their 2002 full-length debut. The album opened at #1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart and #4 on the Billboard Hot 200, fueled by the strength of its first two singles, "Grindin" and "When the Last Time", which both peaked at #34 and #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. In late 2003, the Clipse began recording material for their second album, titled Hell Hath No Fury. Further work on the album would grind to a halt, however, when Arista Records was dissolved into its sister label Jive Records as part of a larger merger between Sony Music Entertainment and BMG. Due to contractual ambiguities, the Clipse were forced to stay on Jive, while Star Trak and the rest of its roster moved to a new home at Interscope Records.
